Who Needs Working at Heights Training?

Working at heights creates serious risks in construction, maintenance,
roofing, telecommunications, utilities and many other industries.

South Australian WHS laws require employers and workers to manage the
risk of falls. From 1 July 2026, construction work involving a risk of
falling more than two metres is classed as high-risk construction work
and requires a Safe Work Method Statement.

The nationally recognised RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights
unit is commonly required by employers, contractors and worksites as
evidence that a worker has completed practical working-at-heights training.
Site-specific inductions, procedures and competency requirements may also apply.

Working at heights training is commonly completed by:

  • Construction workers and labourers
  • Electricians, plumbers and carpenters
  • Roofers and roof plumbers
  • Painters and decorators
  • Telecommunications technicians
  • Maintenance and facilities workers
  • Warehouse workers completing tasks at height
  • Civil construction and utilities workers
  • Solar panel installers

Training does not replace workplace-specific inductions, Safe Work Method
Statements, supervision or other competency requirements set by an employer
or worksite.
