HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely provides practical manual handling training for workers who perform lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, holding, restraining or repetitive workplace tasks.

This nationally recognised course helps participants identify hazardous manual tasks, assess the factors that create risk and use appropriate techniques, equipment and workplace procedures to reduce the likelihood of musculoskeletal injury.

Training includes practical activities designed to develop safer workplace habits and the confidence to recognise, control and report manual handling hazards.

This course is not designed for healthcare, aged-care or direct-client-care workers. It does not cover patient transfers, client repositioning or the use of healthcare-specific patient-handling equipment.

Training commences: 8:30 am
Arrival time: Between 8:00 am and 8:15 am for enrolment and identification checks

Participants arriving after 8:30 am may not be admitted because compulsory training and assessment information will have been missed. Course fees may still apply.

What You Will Learn

HLTWHS005 manual handling training covers the skills and knowledge required to recognise, prepare for and safely complete workplace manual tasks.

Identifying hazardous manual tasks: Recognise tasks that may create a risk of injury to yourself or other people.
Recognising risk factors: Consider posture, movement, force, repetition, duration, workplace layout and the characteristics of the load.
Assessing risk: Determine the nature and extent of the risk associated with a manual task.
Preparing the workplace: Organise the work area, task and workflow according to workplace procedures.
Preparing loads: Prepare and package loads appropriately before movement.
Personal protective equipment: Select and use PPE appropriate to the task and workplace.
Working within personal capabilities: Recognise when a task requires assistance, changed methods or mechanical equipment.
Safer posture and movement: Use appropriate posture and handling techniques to reduce muscular load and physical strain.
Mechanical aids: Select, adjust and use suitable handling devices according to manufacturer instructions.
Task pacing: Pace and schedule manual tasks according to workplace procedures.
Reporting hazards and injuries: Follow workplace procedures for reporting hazardous tasks, symptoms of injury and actual injuries.
Improving workplace safety: Participate in safety activities and contribute to risk-management processes for manual tasks.

Training and Assessment

Training is delivered face to face and includes a combination of instructor-led learning, workplace examples and practical activities.

Assessment may include:

Written knowledge questions
Practical demonstrations
Identification of hazardous manual-task risk factors
Preparation and completion of manual tasks
Selection and use of appropriate equipment or mechanical aids
Workplace scenarios and discussion activities

Participants must successfully complete all required training and assessment activities to be assessed as competent.

Student Requirements

Participants must bring one original, current photo-identification document and provide a valid Unique Student Identifier.

Wear comfortable, workplace-appropriate clothing and fully enclosed footwear suitable for practical manual handling activities.

Certification

Participants who are assessed as competent and complete all enrolment, USI, payment and administration requirements will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely.

Certification is issued electronically following successful course completion.

TLID0020 – Shift Materials Safely Using Manual Handling Hethods course is designed for the construction and transport industries and is NOT suitable for health care workers.

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to shift loads safely using manual handling techniques. It provides the skills to ensure workers only carry out manual handling in compliance with the relevant Work Health and Safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OH&S) regulations for manual handling and movement of loads.

The course also includes assessing for risks associated with relocating the loads, planning relocation process and carrying out the relocations in accordance with the safe lifting plan.

Course Content

Applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate risks that may exist when manually lifting and handling goods and materials
Applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures
Communicating effectively with others when manually lifting and handling goods and materials
Implementing contingency plans when manually lifting and handling, goods and materials
Interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work
Interpreting manual handling risks
Modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments
Operating and adapting to differences in loads and materials in accordance with standard operating procedures
Reading and interpreting instructions, procedures and information relevant to the manual lifting and handling of goods and materials
Selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards
Using correct manual handling practices
Working collaboratively with others when manually lifting and handling goods and materials
Working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Course Delivery

FACT courses are completed face-to-face at our training location 34 South Terrace, Adelaide 5000. We provide the theory-based reading booklet (Learners Guide) as well as the pre-course study requirements which is in the confirmation email received at completion of booking.

To ensure the integrity of our process, on the day of attendance, Photo ID needs to be provided, Knowledge requirements completed to enable class participation.

2-3 hrs based on a class of 12 students

Certificate Issued

Upon successful completion of all training, assessment and administrative requirements, a PDF certificate with email security will be emailed to student personal email addresses as supplied by them. Some conditions apply, including provision of the student USI.

The student USI must be provided prior to the start of the day of practical training and assessment otherwise we cannot guarantee completion of practial training.
