Childcare First Aid Training FAQs

Your HLTAID012 qualification is valid for three years from the date of issue. However, the CPR component requires annual renewal to stay compliant with National Quality Standards. Most childcare centres require staff to refresh CPR every 12 months, even if your full early childhood first aid course certificate hasn’t expired yet.

Bring a valid photo ID (driver’s licence, passport, or proof-of-age card) and wear comfortable clothing you can move in – you’ll be kneeling and practising chest compressions. Enclosed shoes are required. We provide all training equipment, including infant and child manikins, training EpiPens, asthma spacers, bandages, and AEDs.

Yes. Many students take HLTAID012 before starting work in childcare because employers want to see current certification before hiring. Parents and grandparents also complete this training to protect children at home. If you’re studying early childhood education, getting your childcare first aid qualification now makes you more employable and might be required for placements.

We send simple pre-course materials via email when you book – usually 2-3 hours of reading and short videos covering basic concepts like DRSABCD, recognising emergencies, and legal responsibilities. Completing this before your session means more time for hands-on practice on the day.

Yes. Infants (under 12 months) require different techniques than toddlers (1-3 years) or preschoolers (3-5 years). CPR hand placement changes based on size. Choking response differs between infants and older children. We practise on both infant and child manikins so you understand these differences.

We also cover how to communicate with children of different ages during emergencies. Scenarios throughout the HLTAID012 training reflect various ages and settings, from bottle-feeding incidents with babies to playground injuries with school-age children.

No, we use training devices specifically designed for practice. Real EpiPens are expensive and single-use; once triggered, they can’t be reset. Training EpiPens look and feel identical, but don’t contain medication or needles. They let you practise the correct technique safely.

Same with asthma management. We provide training spacers and puffers for practice. If your child has specific devices at their childcare centre, ask us about them during the HLTAID012 session. We’ll explain any differences in technique. You can also bring photos of your child’s action plan to discuss during breaks. Our trainers can answer questions about specific medications or equipment.
