Skills Learnt in the Licence to Operate Forklift Truck
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift truck safely in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a HRWL licence to operate this plant.
Forklift truck means a powered industrial truck equipped with lifting media made up of a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other attachments that can be raised 900 mm or more above the ground, but does not include a pedestrian-operated truck or a pallet truck.
Course Content
- applying safe operating procedures for a forklift
- applying relevant forklift truck manufacturer requirements and data plate information and approved modifications to attachments fitted are in accordance with manufacturer requirements
- carrying out pre-start checks, including visual inspection which must include:
- conducting and applying risk and hazard assessment strategies
- complying with Commonwealth, State and Territory Work Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)/Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislation, regulations safe work and workplace procedures
- confirming traffic management plan procedures relevant to their role in the work area
- conducting relevant procedures for refuelling and isolating fuel/power source as per manufacturer requirements using appropriate PPE
- determining relevant lifting attachment to perform work/task
- determining lift requirements
- ensuring risk control measures within the work area are effective as per workplace procedures
- identifying, isolating and tagging out defective equipment and reporting to authorised person/s
- interpreting and confirming relevant documentation, workplace instructions, safety information, emergency procedures for the work task and relevant area
- interpreting workplace procedures in relation to various environmental conditions
- maintaining communication with other workplace personnel through using worksite procedures
- maintaining three points of contact whilst accessing and egressing forklift truck and ensuring rungs / steps are free of hazards
- operating and monitoring safe forklift truck operations using minimum 250kg dynamic and non-dynamic loads
- reporting to relevant person/s on site risk control measures that are not in place or are deficient
- setting up an exclusion zone
- securely parking forklift truck and isolating in appropriate position
- shutting down a forklift truck in accordance with manufacturer requirements and workplace procedures
Forklift Course Delivery and Cost
Students are required to be competent in written and spoken English and must declare that they have the Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills required prior to booking. The course is an entry-level course, aimed at level 1 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (Certificate 2 level). There is a requirement to be able to read, understand and explain basic construction terminology, hazards, policies and procedures, etc. While there is a large amount of legislation covered, it is covered mostly by way of discussion, videos and training and the student's ability to read complex text is not required for this purpose. The LLN requirements of this course do not exceed those of a standard construction industry workplace.

Training and Assessment: 2 days (equivalent to 16 hours)
Assessment only: 1 day (equivalent to 8 hours)

Photo ID
All Students must photo ID which can be either Passport or Australian Drivers licence/Proof of Age card.
Assessment Requirements
- The course is progressively assessed for underpinning knowledge and at completion of formal instruction a cumulative assessment will occur.
- Pre-study and workplace assignments are required to be completed at the workplace in the student’s own time.
Course Completion
After succesful completion, you will have completed your nationally accrediated unit for Licence to Operate forklift TLILIC003.
You will then receive your Notice of Satisfactory Assessment and Tax Invoice to present at Service SA to complete the licence process.
